There were only a few coins inthe hat.
A man was walkingby. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped theminto
the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, andwrote some words. He put the
sign back so thateveryone who walked by would see the new words.
Soon the hat beganto fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blindboy.
That afternoon the man who hadchanged the sign! came to see how things were.
The boy recognizedhis footsteps and asked,
"Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did youwrite?"
The man said, "I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but ina different way."
What he hadwritten was: "Today is a beautiful day and I cannot seeit."
Do you think thefirst sign and the second sign were saying the samething?
Of course bothsigns told people that the boy was blind. But the first signsimply
said the boy wasblind.
But the first signsimply told people to help by putting some money in thehat.
The second signtold people that they wer! e ! able to enjoy the beauty of theday,
but the boy could not enjoy it because he was blind.
The first signsimply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people theywere
so lucky that they were notblind. Should we be surprised that the secondsign
was moreeffective?
